Troubleshooting

If a problem should occur with the recorder, check that the following items are correct before proceeding with troubleshooting procedures. As an aid in troubleshooting, refer to the schematic diagram and parts lists included in this manual.

  1. Head stacks are cleaned and demagnetized.
  2. Head azimuth and height are correct.
  3. Record bias has been adjusted properly.
  4. Recommended tape has been used.
  5. Input and/or output connectors are correctly wired.
  6. Ac line voltage is within ± 10% of indicated power requirement.
  7. All operational switches have been correctly set.
  8. Adjustment procedures have been correctly made using accurate test equipment.

Some of the more common problems and possible causes are listed in Table 5-1.

Capstan does not rotate.Tension arm safety switch is defective, capstan motor power supply (+24Vdc) is defective or capstan motor fuse is blown.
No play mode function.Control circuit (PA-316) is defective (Q1 is defective) or pinch roller solenoide is defective.
No F.FWD mode function.Control circuit (PA-316) is defective (Q2 is defective).
No rewind mode function.Control circuit (PA-316) is defective (Q3 is defective).
Record lamp on transport does not illuminate and no record mode function.Control circuit (PA-316) is defective (Q4 is defective).
Brake solenoide does not move.Brake solenoide is defective or brake adjustment (Stroke is incorrect).
Tape speed is incorrect.Capstan servo control is defective or pinch roller adjustment is incorrect (not bottomed).
RECORD/REPRODUCE ELECTRONICS
Record lamps illuminate but no recording.Bias master oscillator (PA-315) is defective or bias power supply (+29Vdc) is defective.
Record lamps illuminate but one of channels no recording.Bias buffer amplifier is defective, record head is defective or record cable is open.
One of channels no recording and the record lamp does not illuminate.Record selector switch is defective.
Recording function but no erasing.Erase head is defective or erase head cable is disconnecting.
Equalization Relays do not move.Q1 on transport mother board (PA-315) is defective or speed switch is defective.
