Service & calibration notes
Notes from servicing an original Mini Pro, written for owners doing the same. This section grows as the restoration progresses; each topic gets added once I've actually done the work and can vouch for it.
Before you follow any of it, make sure the machine is a first-generation deck: Is it a Mini Pro?. Much of what's here — the belt-driven capstan, the run caps, the dummy plug — doesn't apply to a BII or a BIII. And the numbers you're aiming at when you calibrate are on the specifications page: Otari's own tolerances for signal-to-noise, crosstalk, flutter, speed and erasure.
The one thing to check first: the dummy plug
If your transport is completely dead, check the accessory/remote socket before opening the machine. The transport control circuit passes through that socket and must be closed by a shorting "dummy plug" whenever no remote is connected. A missing plug makes a perfectly healthy machine look broken — mine was sold as faulty for exactly this reason. Listening through modern gear
My sound bar only has optical input, so the listening chain is: XLR line out → XLR-to-RCA cable → analog-to-digital converter → optical into the sound bar. It's the same converter that did duty on the Akai X-150D during the warm-up.
I'm honestly not sure whether this counts as being wired "unbalanced" — but there was nothing extra to do. Plug in, press play, it worked. The rear jack panel — model plate, XLR rows and the accessory socket — is pictured on the identify page and in the gallery.
Equipping the bench
The manual's Table 1-1 lists everything needed to align this machine — in 1976 instruments. Test equipment: a modern bench maps each one to today's equivalents, used and new, at three price points, with the manual's own test requirements as the yardstick. For the gray-market route, the AliExpress bench gives verdict-by-verdict coverage of the cheap stuff.
