Troubleshooting

If a problem should occur with the recorder, check that the following items are correct before proceeding with troubleshooting procedures. As an aid in troubleshooting, refer to the schematic diagram and parts lists included in this manual.

  1. Head stacks are cleaned and demagnetized.
  2. Head azimuth and height are correct.
  3. Record bias has been adjusted properly.
  4. Recommended tape has been used.
  5. Input and/or output connectors are correctly wired.
  6. Ac line voltage is within ± 10% of indicated power requirement.
  7. All operational switches have been correctly set.
  8. Adjustment procedures have been correctly made using accurate test equipment.

Some of the more common problems and possible causes are listed in Table 5-1.

Capstan shaft does not rotateTension arm safety switch is defective. On models 2S or 4S, capstan motor is defective or capstan belt come off. On Models 2SD or 4SD, power source for capstan motor (+24Vdc or +5Vdc) is defective, or fuse of the power supply is blown.
No PLAY mode functionControl circuit (PA-284) is defective (Tr8,9,SCR2,3)), or pinch roller solenoid is defective.
No FAST FORWARD mode functionControl circuit (PA-284) is defective (Tr 3,4, SCR 1).
No REWIND mode functionControl circuit (PA-284) is defective (Tr2).
Record lamp of transport does not illuminate and no RECORD mode functionControl circuit (PA-284) is defective (Tr10, SCR4)
Brake solenoide does not move.Control circuit (PA-284) is defective (Tr5), or brake solenoi--lenoide is defective, or brake adjustment is incorrect (strok).
Tape speed is incorrectPinch roller adjustment is incorrect (not bottomed), or dirty pinch roller, dirty capstan shaft. On models 2S or 4S, loose or dirty capstan belt slips, or capstan motor is defective. On models 2SD or 4SD; capstan servo control circuit is defective, or adjusted incorrectly. Pitch control nob is at wrong position.
Output level is wrongReproduce head switch is at wrong position, or output level switch is wrong position.
